Handy Cartoon For The Populars

One wonders if these reviews of 1940 would have been a bit more excited had they realized that this cartoon would be the birth of a series that would last in one form or another up to the present day – Tom and Jerry.

From page 56 of Motion Picture Herald, Saturday 9th March 1940:

Puss Gets the Boot

(MGM)

Ising Cartoon

In this Rudolf Ising pigmented pen point of a cat and mouse game, the little rodent comes out of the fray victor over his feline tormentor. How the victim turns the tables on his tormentor results in a gay, brightly tinted and sketched bout. Especially clever is the portrayal of smug superiority of the cat dictator. – Running time, eight minutes.

From page 13 of Today’s Cinema, Wednesday 26th June 1940:

“PUSS GETS THE BOOT”

M-G-M. AMERICAN. 826 FEET. CERT. “U.” RELEASE: NOT FIXED.

A cartoon in Technicolor in which a resourceful mouse puts puss on the spot, this after some knock-about fun with kitchen crockery. Handy cartoon for the populars.

From page 16 of Kinematograph Weekly, Thursday 27th June 1940:

PUSS GETS THE BOOT- (Cartoon in Technicolor). American (U). 826 feet. Release not fixed. – Excitement, suspense and retribution all held together by laughable situations. Great fun for the youngsters, and the grown-ups will laugh with them.
